Translation Evaluation - a State of the Art Survey
نویسنده
چکیده
Measuring translation quality is a subjective process which relies on human judgements. This paper discusses different frameworks used in the process of translation evaluation with special focus on error classification schemes used both in the translation industry and in translation teaching institutions. Such error-based models, like BlackJack or SAE J 2450, allow human judgements to benefit from a consistent and systematic error classification. Apart from offering an overview of the existing error-based translation evaluation systems, this paper describes two recent projects which further the research in this field. This paper does not claim to provide an exhaustive list of existing error-based translation evaluation tools nor does it aim to impose or offer a particular model for translation analysis.

متن کاملSurvey of Machine Translation Evaluation
The evaluation of machine translation (MT) systems is an important and active research area. Many methods have been proposed to determine and optimize the output quality of MT systems. Because of the complexity of natural languages, it is not easy to find optimal evaluating methods. The early methods are based on human judgements. They are reliable but expensive, i.e. time-consuming and non-reu...
متن کاملMachine Translation Evaluation: A Survey
This paper introduces the state-of-the-art MT evaluation survey that contains both manual and automatic evaluation methods. The traditional human evaluation criteria mainly include the intelligibility, fidelity, fluency, adequacy, comprehension, and informativeness. We classify the automatic evaluation methods into two categories, including lexical similarity and linguistic features application...
متن کاملThe Afterlife of a Text in Walter Benjamin’s Theory of Translation
Walter Benjamin proposes that a work of art does not belong to a specific time; rather it is transient. A work of art has a 'temporal effect' which is considered as the 'context' of the work in which it has been written. The 'context' cannot be reconstructed to be the same as what once existed;it is constructed.Translator's job is to recreate the life of the original work from one language to a...
متن کاملState-of-the-Art Word Reordering Approaches in Statistical Machine Translation: A Survey
This paper surveys several state-of-the-art reordering techniques employed in Statistical Machine Translation systems. Reordering is understood as the word-order redistribution of the translated words. In original SMT systems, this different order is only modeled within the limits of translation units. Relying only in the reordering provided by translation units may not be good enough in most l...
